Evidence before a decision

How we measure Etsy markets

A useful research result tells you what was observed, where it came from, and what remains unknown.

What our browser engine reads

Our connected Chrome extension reads Etsy search pages for the requested keyword and marketplace. It collects the listing cards available on the pages it actually reaches: listing links, titles, photos, displayed prices, shop names and visible badges. Separate listing-page observations can add cart and recent-purchase messages when Etsy displays them.

A run covers a sample of search results. It is not Etsy’s complete catalog, a private seller dashboard or a feed of every transaction. Browser availability, page loading and verification can limit the sample; incomplete collection must stay visible in the result.

Read each signal in its proper context

Observed evidence and its limits
SignalWhat it supportsWhat it cannot establish
Displayed priceThe price shown for that card and currency at collection time. The final price of every variation or a buyer’s full delivered cost.
In cartsEtsy’s displayed cart count. A “20+” message is a lower bound.Completed orders, unique prospective buyers or a conversion rate.
Bought in the last 24 hoursA recent-purchase message displayed on that listing when read.A verified daily sales ledger or a number to multiply into monthly revenue.
Shop salesA shop-wide total, when visible and collected.Sales of one product or sales during a chosen month.
Search position and adsPosition and advertising evidence in that observed search.A universal rank across countries, shoppers and dates.

Why an empty value stays empty

A dash means the value was not measured or was not displayed. It does not mean zero sales, no demand or an absent badge. We calculate badge shares from listings that could be classified. Prices displayed in another currency do not become invented USD conversions.

How to use an opportunity score

A score is a derived comparison of the evidence available in the sample. It helps prioritize investigation; it is not a probability of business success, a sales forecast or a promise of profit. Compare coverage and freshness before comparing scores. A small, incomplete sample calls for more evidence.

A repeatable research routine

  1. Write down the product, buyer and use case before collecting results.
  2. Use the same marketplace, page depth and filters when comparing niches.
  3. Check returned titles and photos against the intended product. “Wood watch” and “wooden watch box” describe different products.
  4. Record when and where each observation was made. Recheck shortlisted listings before deciding.
  5. Compare your materials, labor, packaging and delivery costs against the observed price range.

The worksheet contains blank observation fields and a clearly labeled practice example. It does not contain measured sales or demand data.

Our editorial approach

Guides are written and maintained by NicheWright. Examples illustrate a method and are labeled when they are not measurements. We link official sources for marketplace guidance and revise pages when their substance changes. Send a correction through our contact page.
